10 Pop Songs That Are Actually Incredibly Dark

8. It's Not Living (If It's Not With You) - The 1975

When Matt Healy talks about the songwriting process he has with the 1975, it normally comes down to the existential teenage angst in a major key. It's not like he's that far off either, with each album getting more heavy in subject matter and tying the most heartbreaking scenarios up with a smile, along with a melody that could occasionally break your heart. Just when it looked like we had a song with no hangups though, Matty just needed to tell us what the song is really about.

Though the '80s buzz that you get off of It's Not Living is too much to bear sometimes, Matt has been candid about the fact that this entire song was written while he was still junking up his brain on heroin. Although he had written countless love songs when he was still out of control, it's hard not to look at this track as a love song to his old habit, which is strange considering he was more on the straight and narrow when it was recorded.

If anything, listening to a song like this is more about just the hold that any drug can have on you, as Matty talks about living the extravagant lifestyle in beautiful shoes, all while making his veins collapse just to feel something. The song might sound like one of the best tracks that the '80s never produced, but not too many people who have used heroin in the past can really claim to have this kind of energy when under the influence.
