10 Pop Songs That Artists Want You To Forget
4. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Upon first forming Nirvana, Kurt Cobain wasn't exactly looking to big in the biggest band in the world or anything. He may have had a vision for what Nirvana could have been, but the dreams of someone making it big in the city of Seattle was practically a pipe dream back in the days when they were making Bleach. Once he got a taste of what real fame looks like with Smells Like Teen Spirit though, Kurt decided that he didn't like it all that much.
Which is strange considering that Teen Spirit might be one of the more perfect songs that the rock scene has ever given us, as Cobain woke us all up and kickstarted the disaffected genre of grunge that the '90s ran with. Despite having all of the puzzle pieces to be a pop hit, this song became an albatross that hung over Kurt's neck, never wanting to play the song live and getting more and more agitated that his audience was getting populated by jocks, the same kind of people that beat him up in high school for listening to this kind of music.
It's also sad to think about when you consider what the song is actually about. For as proud as Kurt was about it at the time, if you listen closely, the character in this song isn't very happy. He's struggling to get all of his feelings out and can only lash out in anger for someone to entertain him. This was the sound of frustration, and it only seemed to fuel Kurt even more in the next few years.
