10 Popular Musicians You Didn't Know Were From Kansas City

6. Melissa Etheridge

Melissa Etheridge first broke into the mainstream with her self-titled 1988 album, which yielded a hit with "Bring Me Some Water" and a Grammy Award. However, Etheridge really broke into the big time with 1993's Yes I Am, thanks to hits like "I'm The Only One" and "Come To My Window." She has since received plenty more awards, has received an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music, has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and sold millions more albums.

Earlier this year, Etheridge performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Kansas City Chiefs playoff game. While she grew up in Kansas, Etheridge did a lot of early gigs around Kansas City and has performed with the Kansas City Symphony. Per a November 2018 appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, she even attempted to write a song about the earlier-mentioned Kansas City Chiefs, although she struggled to come up with a rhyme for "Mahomes."
