10 Positive Songs We Could All Use Right Now
9. Tubthumping - Chumbawumba
Over the years, "Tubthumping" has garnered a reputation as something of a jock anthem. From it being used in sporting events and movies, the song almost automatically conjures up visions of screaming at the top of your lungs outside a pub in the early hours of the morning. However, the actual meaning behind the song is a lot more poignant than people may think.
Ever since their inception, Chumbawumba have been a band with an overtly political stance. By the time they got around to making "Tubthumping," they had already been known as an anarchist punk act who never wanted to cater to the bigwhigs of the record industry. After this record came out though, their political message was a bit muddied, and probably for the better.
By making the chorus about getting up after being knocked down, the song became less specific to the politics and more of a song about the everyman in all of us, who stands their ground no matter what obstacles stand in their way. With various higher-ups who are more than willing to stoke the fires of our anxiety, this is a song that can inspire thousands to not lose hope even when things seem at their most grim.
