The central story behind The Libertines is, of course, the love-hate relationship between Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. While it provided the crackling tension which set many of their tracks alight - with their issues explicitly laid out on singles such as 'Can't Stand Me Now' and 'What Became Of The Likely Lads', it also led to the band's eventual breakup in 2004. Now, with a rabidly-awaited third album on the horizon, fans can't help but fear another huge bust-up, especially given Pete's long history of erratic behaviour. While embarking upon a second hiatus before releasing this new LP would certainly add to the band's intoxicating sense of mystery and unpredictability, it would also be a huge blow to fans who've waited over a decade for new material.
