10 Punk, Rock And Metal Bands You Need To Hear Right Now
1. Brutus
Belgian three-piece Brutus have gone from strength to strength since the release of their debut album "Burst" in 2017. Their 2019 follow up "Nest" saw them perfect their heady mixture of shoegaze, punk and metal and in 2020 they captured their impressive live show on wax with the appropriately named "Live In Ghent".
The instant takeaway from Brutus' music is the raw power and beauty of vocalist Stefanie Mannaerts' voice. The second takeaway is "she's also the drummer!?!". She clearly sings and plays her heart out and as a performer, she's utterly mesmerising to watch.
But a strong vocalist and drummer wouldn't mean much if the rest of the band weren't up to scratch and Peter Mulders' bass provides the perfect level of heft and grunt, while Stijn Vanhoegaerden's shrieking, crooning and pulverising guitar completes the perfect line-up.
With songs like "Django", "Cemetary" and "Drive" in their back catalogue, Brutus are a force to be reckoned with but it's the powerfully brooding "War" that shows off the sheer brilliance they're capable off.
