10 Rock Albums That Peak With The Final Song

2. The Doors - The Doors

If an 11-minute-long composition with references to Oedipus and a place in one of the greatest films of the 20th Century doesn't convince you that this entry is valid, then nothing will.

The Doors' self-titled debut album is totally nuts. It features a writing credit for the German playwright Bertolt Brecht, for goodness' sake! However, come the final track, it just goes into another galaxy.

The End began life as a farewell song from Jim Morrison to his former girlfriend, but over time it evolved into a twisting narrative about the apocalypse and a giant snake. You know, the traditional trajectory of a breakup.

It's widely regarded as one of the greatest songs of all time, although that's more from an artistic point of view than a populist stance. Imagine hearing this on the radio first thing in the morning.

Is it a little self-indulgent? Possibly, but it's also an unfiltered view into the mind of one of the most fascinating creative figures of recent times.

This isn't just a song - it's a historical artefact.

And yes, Apocalypse Now definitely helps its case.
