10 Rock Albums That Were A Nightmare To Make

8. Rock n Roll - John Lennon

Towards the mid '70s, it was becoming clear that John Lennon needed to take a break from making records. His latest albums with Yoko Ono were definitely pushing the boundaries for what Lennon was known for, but the constant political agendas on records like Some Time In New York City left a lot of fans cold. That wasn't going to stop the lawyers though, and John had to fulfill his contract to the record company right in the middle of his lost weekend.

Stemming back from getting sued by Chuck Berry's publishers for using part of his song for the Beatles' Come Together, Rock N Roll was the album that was supposed to be about John having fun with some of his favorite tunes he heard as a kid. Being separated from his wife in Los Angeles though, the sessions involved the seedier side of John Lennon a lot more often, drinking constantly throughout the day and leading to some days where nothing got done. Then again, producer Phil Spector didn't help much, bringing a gun into the recording sessions and firing it off in the middle of the control room, really hurting John's ears.

Even when John had started to wash his hands of the whole thing, the record still went through development hell, as Phil ran off with the tapes for a few years and not getting to put it out for a few more months until they were recovered. The songs themselves might sound like a rip roaring good time, but you can also hear that John's lost weekend is finally starting to catch up with him.
