10 Rock Albums That Were Stuck In Development Hell

6. Imaginos - Blue Oyster Cult

Trying to get your head around just what went on behind the scenes during the making of this album is a one way ticket to migraine-ville.

Imaginos began life as a solo album for Blue Oyster Cult drummer Albert Bouchard, who began writing music for it back in the early 1970s.

The name comes from a character created by producer Sandy Pearlman for a series of poems in the 1960s. In fact, the name Blue Oyster Cult comes from one of these early Imaginos scripts.

Unsure whether or not it had an umlaut to begin with though.

The music for the album was completed by 1977, but the following few years were a turbulent time for our pals in the Cult. Bouchard was actually fired from the group in 1981.

He worked with Pearlman to get the album finished by 1984, but the record label rejected it. The band then began working on Imaginos in 1986 before it finally got its release in July of 1988.

And what was the end result of these years of hard work and toil? Number 122 on the albums charts and mixed reviews from critics.

Great.
