10 Rock And Metal Albums From The 2000s The Critics Got Wrong

2. Iowa - Slipknot (2001)

Iowa is considered by many Slipknot fans to be one of the band’s best albums. But based on Metacritic, it would appear to be their weakest LP.

Slipknot were in a dark place during the making of their sophomore album, and it shows. The pain-stricken moans on ‘(515)’ set the tone for what’s to come. Even when the album slows down on tracks such as ‘Gently’ and ‘Iowa’, the atmosphere is still riddled with anguish.

As such, Iowa is not an accessible album. But the reason why so many Slipknot fans hold it in such high esteem is simply due to how dark it is. The raw emotion and rage presented on this record is astounding. Songs such as ‘The Heretic Anthem’, ‘Everything Ends’, and ‘Metabolic’ are amongst the band’s heaviest material.

As with Evanescence’s Fallen, the album has received a heightened level of respect from music critics and was even named by Loudwire as the second-best metal record of the 2000s.
