10 Rock Artists That Ripped Off Other Bands

7. Creed

The arrival of grunge was exactly what the rock world needed at the turn of the decade. As the rest of the rock scene was getting bogged down by the third and fourth generation of hair metal bands, these newer acts coming from Seattle were bringing an authenticity back into rock and roll that hadn't been seen in a while. At the same time, it only takes a little while for a record label to come out with ten carbon copies of the same thing.

On the surface though, Creed doesn't necessarily have anything in common with the grunge acts of old. Sure, their tunes may have had a few slower riffs and a back to basics approach to rock and roll, but you weren't going to really mistake Mark Tremonti for any other guitarist in the metal scene. No, the real copycat all comes down to the way Scott Stapp sings.

Though Stapp's lyrical style may be solely indebted to Christian rock, it's clear that he has gone to the Eddie Vedder school of vocal singing, with a yarl that sounds incredibly fake coming out of his mouth. Whereas Eddie's voice felt like a natural extension of his soulful lyrics, this just feels like a Christian rock singer being re-packaged as grunge music. This wasn't the first instance of copycatting in the post grunge world, but it does feel like the cheapest in retrospect.
