10 Rock Artists That Ripped Off Other Bands
6. Greta Van Fleet
Rock and roll as a whole would be in a very different place had it not been for Led Zeppelin. After coming out of the British Blues boom in the '60s, Zeppelin created some of the most essential riffs in the history of rock, setting the standard for what was considered heavy music. It's virtually impossible to make songs that classic and not influence people...it's just how much influence though.
Though countless bands have borrowed a page or two from Zeppelin's playbook, Greta Van Fleet is where it starts to get a little questionable as to the influence. On the surface, the music that these kids are making is fine for what it is, with riffs that feel like they're pulled straight out of the '70s. On the other hand, the way that Jake Kizka pulls from Robert Plant makes it feel like they're putting on a rock and roll costume rather than actually writing riffs of their own.
This continues a long line of bands who have tried to crib from Zeppelin, but this one does feel like the most shallow defacing of Jimmy Page's legacy. It's also never a good thing when you put on a record and think, "wow, I wish I were listening to Zeppelin IV right now." While these kids still may have a bright future ahead of them, they're going to need to seriously reinvent their sound if they want to stay relevant on the rock scene.
