10 Rock Artists That Tried To Destroy Their Career

1. Bob Dylan

When the '60s counterculture started to turn a corner, it looked like Bob Dylan was going to help lead us into the next phase of society. With just a guitar in his hand and his way with words, Bob's lyrics seemed to put a certain energy in the air, describing what many young people were feeling better than they could articulate themselves. It's hard enough taking care of yourself though, and Dylan managed to have an entire generation on his shoulders once the revolution got underway.

Starting with Like a Rolling Stone, Dylan started to redefine what he meant to his fans, embracing rock and roll and leaving the folky songs behind most of the time. Once he started to get even more star power though, Dylan was never one to work with the press, always being cagey in interviews and never giving you a straight answer most of the time. Though the snide attitude may have endeared him to the younger generation, Dylan wasn't looking to be a spokesman either, releasing albums like Self Portrait as a deliberate attempt to shake off the prophet-like person that he was garnering at the time.

Even as the years went on, Dylan only seemed to follow his own muse most of the time, whether that meant making religious music in the '80s or reinventing his voice around the '90s to put even more gravel into it. Dylan may not have set out to have this kind of acclaim from his fans, but that hasn't stopped his listeners from picking apart every line that he has ever committed to a record.
