10 Rock Artists That Tried To Destroy Their Career

4. Kurt Cobain - Nirvana

When Nirvana were first cutting their teeth as a live act, Kurt Cobain was not really willing to go along with the world of pop. If you listen to an album like Bleach, the genesis of the band seemed to have an interest in the world of noise punk a lot of the time, almost like a musical art project that kept evolving in Seattle. A funny thing happened once the recording of Nevermind started, and it would continue to haunt Kurt for the rest of his days.

Even though Nevermind gave him the success that he had wanted out of his career, being labeled as the leader of his generation definitely shook Kurt, especially when being tied to an album that he didn't particularly care for. After slagging off songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit for being too poppy, Kurt was determined to make the kind of art record that he wanted, and In Utero almost lost him his job because of how noisy it was compared to Nevermind, with live drums and songs that had more than a few things to say about how he was being treated in the industry.

Though Kurt got to make his own record, he was still never really able to find peace, going on a tour that he didn't want to commit to before going back home to Seattle and committing suicide in 1994. Fame can be a bit of a tricky beast to handle most of the time, and the honesty Kurt put into his art seemed to be too much for him by the end.
