10 Rock Bands That Continued Without Major Members
7. William Goldsmith - Foo Fighters
From day one of the Foo Fighters, everyone knew that Dave Grohl was the one who steered the ship of the band. Since the entire first record was made by Dave completely by himself, the only reason why an entire band exists is basically to give the rest of the guys opportunities to tour. When you're in the drummer's seat though, it's pretty much impossible to match up to Dave's drumming standards.
Once the Foos were set to go into the studio for the second album the Colour and the Shape, producer Gil Norton was getting more and more agitated with William Goldsmith's subpar drumming, nicknaming him and bassist Nate Mendel "the rhythmless section." To add insult to injury though, the band decided to take drastic measures to get the album done, with everyone relocating to a different studio and Dave rerecording all of Goldsmith's drum parts on the record.
By the time recording wrapped up, William was basically given an ultimatum: you can stay in the band, but Dave has to play drums on the record. With a bruised ego and trying to stand his ground, William decided it would be better if he stepped out of the fold, returning to Sunny Day Real Estate while Taylor Hawkins took over the drummer's stool. Considering the kindred spirit attitude between Hawkins and Grohl in recent years, the rhythm of the Foos ends up feeling a lot more natural.
