10 Rock Bands That Destroyed Their Own Legacies
7. Van Halen
At the start of the 80's, Van Halen were quickly becoming one of the biggest bands in the world. From their sellout tours to the amazing live shows, the band were truly masters of their craft and even managed to overcome the departure of David Lee Roth with powerhouse vocalist Sammy Hagar.
After Sammy left though, the initial cracks in the Van Halen ship started to show. The band quickly thought to replace Hagar with Gary Cherone, but the album they made with him out front left many hard rockers feeling burned. Even when the band was still great from a musical point of view, they simply couldn't get it together when it came to find someone to sing the tunes.
Though they may have had a chequered past, the band reassembled with Roth for a tour and album cycle, but the actual results seemed to be the Van Halen brothers resting on their laurels rather than just playing what they want to play. The band even diluted their old magic even further when the rest of the guys kicked out Michael Anthony based on his friendship with Sammy Hagar. There are a lot of bands who live off their previous work, but it seems that Van Halen are more concerned that you only know the past works that they think are important.
