10 Rock Bands That Destroyed Their Own Legacies
4. Black Flag
After the Ramones took the music world by storm in the late 70's, many young kids took that manic energy and transformed it into hardcore punk. While bands like Bad Brains and Minor Threat held their own on the East Coast, Black Flag were the one hardcore bands that felt like they could lead a cultural revolution.
Under the watchful eye of Greg Ginn, the band expanded their sound to include the heaviest music known to rock, from the relentless energy of Damaged to the feral shrieks of My War. Not only were these tracks great for the hardcore scene, but also signaled the change in musical direction later down the line with the rise of grunge.
After the band reassembled in the early 2010's though, What The... left most fans feeling heartbroken. Instead of having that unfiltered aggression of their early years, this felt like a lurching experience with Ginn just showing up to cash a check. At that point, the Black Flag offshoot band OFF ended up sounding closer to the band's original sound than the ACTUAL BAND did. Bands are ever-evolving beasts, but these days it feels like Black Flag are only around to keep the band name alive.
