10 Rock Bands That Destroyed Their Own Legacies
3. The Smiths
No one's collection of alternative rock is complete without at least one of the Smiths' records. The band were pivotal in bridging the gap between post-punk and alternative rock with their songwriting smarts and the melodramatic themes laced throughout their music.
Though the band called it quits years ago, any ounce of happy memories fans have had from that time have been squandered by the ongoing antics of Morrissey. Regardless of the decade, the Smiths frontman has not minced words when discussing his more outlandish opinions. Ever since the band's single "Meat Is Murder," we understood the man's veganism, but his views verge on the wrong side of preachy when he insists that no stadium he performs in should serve any food containing meat. His ongoing political views have also left to more fans facepalming than he may have wanted to.
While it may still be great to listen to tracks like "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," it also feels a bit strange knowing who exactly that voice is singing those tracks. In music, it's normally easily to separate the artist from the art, but it seems that with every other day Morrissey finds a way to test that theory with yet another controversial stance.
