10 Rock Bands That Got Better With Age
7. Pink Floyd
The Pink Floyd that we know today had to go through a few different iterations before fulfilling their prog rock ambitions. As the '60s were undergoing their Flower Power treatment, hearing the psychedelic sounds from Syd Barrett was a lot more whimsical than many people were ready for on albums like Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The future of Floyd would have to be defined without Syd though, but it's not like the rest of the band forgot about him for a second.
In going through one project to the next, the work of both Roger Waters and David Gilmour would come back to the sense of loss that they got from Syd's dismissal from the band, having to be kicked out after not being able to handle the role of a rock star and his sanity at the same time. Going through albums like Meddle though, you can see them stretching the concept of what their music can be, until cashing in on their potential on records like Dark Side of the Moon and the Wall.
If you listen to these songs though, there's still a sense of dread and an almost scary sentiment about going through daily life, leading to the kind of insanity that the Floyd members had to see firsthand. The days of See Emily Play may have been long gone, but even if Wish You Were Here sounded a world away, it still had its heart in the right place.
