10 Rock Bands That Had More Than One Lead Singer
4. System of a Down
System of a Down was a shimmer of light hanging across the nu metal scene. Whereas most bands were content to just count their money and complain about being rich and famous, these Californian headcases were writing scathing indictments of the governmental system that educated listeners and excited them at the same time. It's hard to carry subject matter that heavy, so System stepped up to the plate with two disparate vocalists.
Working almost like dual guitar players, the vocal team of Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian made for some of the most epic vocal performances of the nu metal genre, from the operatic singing of Question! to the beautiful harmonies at the tail end of Chop Suey!. Contrary to the typical lead singer dynamic, Malakian and Tankian sound almost nothing like each other, which gives each of their respective songs their own character.
While Serj's voice is much more nasally focused and eerily precise, Daron's more sophomoric vocal approach brings the perfect balance of angry and psychotic to every trade off they put on record. These kind of vocal styles could sound absolutely dreadful on paper, but whenever they're set to the ringing discord of nu metal guitars, Tankian and Malakian end up being exactly what you need.
