10 Rock Bands That Have Terrible Frontmen
8. Dire Straits
For any major rock band, the frontman is normally thought of to be the mouthpiece of the whole project. Aside from being the dude that sits onstage and sings the songs, you still have to put a bit more emotion into it than just standing there looking bored as hell. If you have a guitar in your hands though, that might work just as well, right?
Ever since Dire Straits first made it big, it was a chore trying to sift through what the band's core gimmick was. Though Sultans of Swing was a showstopper on the charts on pure musical mastery alone, Mark Knopfler was never one to play the game of stardom, being just a random dude who just so happened to front the band. If you thought that was frustrating, it got even more tedious when it came time to transition to MTV.
Up until their breakthrough Brothers in Arms, Knopfler was still a ghost onstage, with most of his charm and charisma beginning and ending at the headband that he wore in the video for Money for Nothing. Hell, even on that one song, the video apparently still needed to have Sting crooning over it to save it from sinking. Though Knopfler is still respected as one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, it's no wonder why his greatest work outside of Dire Straits has been a session musician for other artists.
