10 Rock Bands That Have Two Frontmen
5. Alice in Chains
The grunge movement of the early '90s pretty much killed any chance of anything pretty landing on top of the charts anymore. After the arrival of someone like Kurt Cobain on the scene, the era of the larger than life singers was all but dead in the water. Though Alice in Chains never really ran with the hair metal crowd, they did have one thing the alternative scene didn't...harmonies.
As opposed to just Layne Staley's pained wail, nearly every other song coming from Alice's repertoire served as a duet between Staley and Jerry Cantrell. Since Jerry was the main songwriter behind the tunes, it was actually Layne who suggested that they collaborate more on the vocal front, thinking it would make for a fuller tone in the vocals. The results couldn't have been better, giving tunes that sounded like long lost Black Sabbath songs their own unique flair.
Oftentimes when listening to a song like Rooster or No Excuses, it's hard to even decipher where Staley and Cantrell split, with them creating this weird tandem where you wouldn't know where one voice ended. The addition of Cantrell also became needed when Staley began to fall apart due to drug addiction after their self-titled record. Although Cantrell continues the tradition of warped singing with William DuVall out front, nothing is going to compare to the magic that Staley brought to the table.
