10 Rock Bands That Made Songs Specifically For Movies
3. New Divide - Linkin Park
In the film industry, the work of Michael Bay seems to hang like an albatross over every critic’s neck. Even though the Transformers saga has been tainted by a lot of bad effects, lazy writing, and some of the most mediocre dialogue in action movie history, there are still plenty of kids that will flood the theater to see these robots kick the snot out of each other. At the start of Bay’s robotic journey though, the music actually worked surprisingly well. And that’s because Linkin Park weren’t just looking to make a song for this movie they liked.
For the next few years, the band would work extensively to help assist in scoring the movie as well, with Mike Shinoda really learning his trade in the world of cinematic soundscapes towards the end. Although the tone of New Divide might not have all that much to do with Revenge of the Fallen or anything, you can’t take anything away from the performances here, with Chester’s voice crying out for help amid a sea of electronic noise underneath him.
Even with the more glitchy production, you can still hear the guitars pretty prominently in the mix, along with Shinoda’s piano sound becoming more and more distorted, almost like robots are working their way into the actual plug-ins. This was just the beginning of the madness, as Linkin Park chose to go in a more electronic direction following their work on this one off single. Considering all of the production elements and Chester’s voice being put through different filters, this may as well have been just a warm up for A Thousand Suns.
