10 Rock Bands That Never Made The Same Album Twice

5. Rush

It's pretty much expected that any prog rock band try to break out of their comfort zone every now and again. Since you've built your sound on the foundation of taking the best of every single genre, you don't really have the opportunity to become a one trick pony. Still, for a band that was expected to break new sonic ground, it's astonishing to see how much Rush was able to cover for just three guys.

Though these Canadian icons got their start like every other blues rock centric act of the early '70s, Fly By Night was the moment where the focus shifted, going into far more adventurous territory on songs like By Tor and the Snow Dog. Apparently this was a sign of things to come too, with longer episodic tracks becoming their calling card for albums like Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings, each getting more adventurous than the next.

Even as the decades wore on, you could see Rush getting more excited with their new advancements, going from synthpop in the '80s to rootsy rock and roll around the turn of the century to eventually winding things down with a full on concept album with a string section. While there's a lot more star power from other prog acts like Pink Floyd, there's not too many bands that can hit you with something like Animate, Subdivisions, and Xanadu within the same setlist.
