10 Rock Bands That Never Sold Out

1. David Bowie

As rock and roll was first starting to branch out into new territories, people weren't sure what to make of it. With the Beatles making strides to push the boundaries of rock and roll, you also had bands like Led Zeppelin coming to the forefront as well as the beginnings of art rock with the Velvet Underground twisting the art form into new genres. Once David Bowie arrived though, rock was about to be turned inside out.

Throughout his career, Bowie lived up to being a musical chameleon time after time, never stopping his creativity for a second and trying out new sounds left and right. Starting with the space theme of his first proper album, Bowie never hesitated to adopt the sounds that he loved, whether that be him pioneering the glam rock movement on Aladdin Sane or getting into kraut rock on something like Station to Station.

The madness didn't stop at the end of the '70s though, with the back half of Bowie's career seeing him tackle everything from drum and bass, industrial, and eventually touching on jazz for his final farewell to the world on Blackstar. If there's one thing that ties up Bowie's sound though, it's about being fearless. In a business that can be a very intimidating and scary place for most of us, Bowie taught us that if you're brave, there's no one who can touch you.
