10 Rock Bands That Never Sold Out
4. Rage Against the Machine
Whenever you find yourself at the top of the music world, anyone would get worried about how to stay at the top. Since you were originally a random musician without a penny to your name, now you have cameras hounding you wherever you go and dwelling on every single thing you do. Even at a time when you should tone things down, Rage Against the Machine is the truest example of never pulling your artistic punches.
Starting off with their debut record, Rage was always something a lot more poignant than what they were given credit for, going on long political tirades about the justice system and how you're able to treat your fellow man. Even though that sounds like it could get preachy real quick, the riffs were so killer that they won you over anyway, with Zack de la Rocha spitting his rhymes through gnashed teeth on most of the songs.
You also have to give credit to Tom Morello, who's guitar sound has turned into a genre of its own, acting as both the guitar hero of the band while also creating weird sound effects that made him the impromptu DJ of the band as well. While any band could sell out to make the big bucks, it would never make sense for Rage to do it. When you have that much quality music on the table, there's no reason to ask for much else.
