10 Rock Bands That Only Have One Bad Album
7. Muse
Bad Album: Showbiz
As time has gone on, Muse have proven themselves to be one of the few great power trios working today. With each passing record, Matthew Bellamy has always tried to steer the band in a slightly more ambitious direction, from the soaring space rock of Origin of Symmetry to the symphonic-electronic songs on The Resistance. You'd be saying all that stuff now though...times were a little different back in the late '90s.
With their first step up to the plate with Showbiz, it was clear that Bellamy and co. still had a lot of work to do. Are the trademarks of Muse still there? Sure, with Bellamy's soulful falsetto in place and having a handful of decent licks on tracks like Muscle Museum and Sunburn. On the other hand, this is probably the most incoherent Muse album ever made, flipping from country rock on Falling Down to grunge sounding licks on Sober and even a proto power ballad on Unintended.
For as much as something like Simulation Theory may have been divisive for fans, at least it had the ability to hold onto its themes for the rest of the album. It also doesn't help that you really start to hear the Radiohead influence a little too much after a while, with Cave sounding like something off of the Bends if it was just the slightest bit darker. Given that Muse have changed their sound so much over the years, the feeble attempts at rock on here almost feel cute by comparison.
