10 Rock Bands That Outshine Their Lead Singer

6. Creedence Clearwater Revival

There's no real way to listen to a Creedence Clearwater Revival song and not have a smile on your face. Even if there isn't a Southern bone in your body, the country tinged twang coming from the guitars and the squawking vocals of John Fogerty transport you from your corner of the world to a swampy river in the heart Louisiana. While they might do a great job at putting you in a mood, the same cannot be said for any memorable faces.

Throughout their tenure, CCR's hits were driven solely on the catchiness coming from the tune rather than the rustic nature of the men who made it. For as many chops as they might have had while playing off each other, the lumberjack look that came from every one of them was not the most marketable thing for a record company to work with in the era of the hippie counterculture.

Even when the group ducked into radio interviews, it was always possible that the person set to interview them that day would have no idea which of the four men was actually the lead singer. Regardless of their image problems, CCR's way with melody never failed them until their breakup, with their songs becoming the sound of the late '60s for years to come. Though there's nothing wrong with doing your job well, these swamp rockers proved you didn't even need to show your face to see chart success.
