10 Rock Bands That Released 2 Masterpiece Albums In A Row

6. U2

Over the course of the '80s, there were countless times where U2 could have easily embarrassed themselves. When you delve into the kind of religious and political pools that they were doing around the time of War and October, you're bound to rub some of your fans the wrong way. After their Live Aid performance though, things felt a little different, and they would spend the rest of their career capitalizing on it.

To this day, the Joshua Tree feels both nostalgic and futuristic at the same time. With the blown out cover art and timeless imagery in the lyrics, Bono was clearly trying to create something that was a lot more universal, all while the Edge's guitar effects ushered us into the future. That was the hopeful side of rock and roll though, and we were having none of that by the time the '90s rolled around.

At a time where the band should have been dead in the water, U2 managed to reinvent themselves from the ground up on Achtung Baby, immersing themselves in the more electronic side of rock and piling on the irony throughout the majority of their Zoo TV tour. Coming from the band that sounded like the next wave of rock in '87, it's a bit refreshing to see that they could also be jaded as well. Bono may have a larger than life ego, but that only works when you know that you're still human.
