10 Rock Bands That Survived Major Line-Up Changes

2. Fleetwood Mac

Given all of the attention the band has gotten in recent years, it's almost amusing to think of Fleetwood Mac's beginnings as a down and dirty rock outfit. Regardless of the band's recent output, the group's original sound was deep in the blues when guitarist Peter Green formed the band in the late 60's.

The band were true innovators in the rock world, with Green penning songs like "Oh Well" and even the original version of "Black Magic Woman," which became a rock classic once Santana recorded their version. After years of hard road work, Green left the band to pursue other interests, leaving the band without their main voice. The band acquired jazz guitarist Bob Welch for a while, but the band were floundering once again when Welch left before their self-titled record.

While cutting tracks at Sound City, drummer Mick Fleetwood was impressed by guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, who was working in another session. After being offered the job, Buckingham accepted the position as long as his girlfriend and songwriting partner Stevie Nicks joined as well. Together with songwriter Christine McVie, the band went on to create several hits and produced one of the all-time classic albums of the 70's in Rumours. For a band that were scrambling for the right lineup, Fleetwood Mac really hit the jackpot by scoring two of the greatest songwriters the rock world had ever seen.
