10 Rock Bands That Survived Major Line-Up Changes
1. Genesis
When it comes to keeping a lineup together, Genesis seemed to have the worst luck when it came to maintaining members in the 70's. After main songwriter Anthony Phillips left in the early 70's, the band soldiered on with the help of guitarist Steve Hackett and new drummer Phil Collins.
Though a few years with this lineup produced classics of the prog genre like The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, lead singer Peter Gabriel quickly became dissatisfied with his place in the band and moved onto a solo career. Instead of finding a simple replacement, the band found out the greatest singer they had at their disposal had been among their ranks the whole time.
Once Phil Collins stepped up to the mic, the band had yet another captivating vocal presence to utilize. That didn't completely tide things over though, with Steve Hackett abruptly leaving the group after the band's first tour as a four-piece. Now down to a trio, Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks were still able to carry on, as they released fantastic mixes of prog and pop on albums like Duke and Invisible Touch.
It's a testament to the strength of these musicians that even at half-capacity, they could still come through with some of the best music of their generation.
