10 Rock Bands Who Never Topped Their First Album
4. Wolfmother - Wolfmother (2005)
Aussie rock outfit Wolfmother took everyone by surprise in 2005 with their self-titled first record, which tore our speakers open with a fuzzy, hard-edged, riff-driven soundscape reminiscent of every jam session we've never had.
Sounding like the freshest blend of garage and stoner rock records, mixed with enough classic rock vibes to drag in the old guard, the album really does have something for everyone, and its near immediate success shot singer and guitarist Andrew Stockdale to international stardom.
But such a high can be difficult to come down from, and the band languished for four years before putting out another release -- 2009's Cosmic Egg. That Stockdale took so damn long to follow the record up was not conducive to a fair reception, as it set impossibly lofty expectations, but then so did his claims that it would be "epic"... While the album isn't bad, it also doesn't offer anything new, feeling, for the most part, like B-sides from the first album.
Its successors -- four to date -- have mostly failed to chart, and Wolfmother are no longer met with the excitement they once were, having been usurped by the likes of Greta Van Fleet. But at least we'll always have that first album.
