10 Rock Guitarists Who Were In Two Amazing Bands
5. Tom Morello - Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave
Tom Morello is one of those few guitarists who is almost singular in his playing style. When he first arrived on the scene with Rage Against the Machine, his exquisite blend of wild guitar effects and virtuoso playing revolutionized the game in terms of what could be done with rock guitar. Even though that would have worked fine on its own, this kind of playing style simply cannot be confined to just one group.
Striking off on his own, Morello has already built up a reputable rap sheet on his own under the name the Nightwatchman, where he strips everything back for pure, honest folk rock tunes. Then again, the real departure from Rage came when he formed Audioslave, with Zack de la Rocha being replaced with Chris Cornell. As opposed to the militant quotes you would find in Rage's music, Cornell gave the group a bonafied superstar, giving him the opportunity to flesh out his pipes on straightforward rock tunes like Cochise and Like a Stone.
Even though Prophets of Rage may have been a fun exercise of past glory, it wasn't until Rage reunited that we got to see Morello back in top form again, making more of the wild effects finesse we hadn't seen since his Audioslave days. With a new tour around the corner, here's hoping that this next iteration of Rage will bring even more musical mayhem to the studio.
