10 Rock Guitarists Who Were In Two Amazing Bands

4. George Harrison - Beatles/Traveling Wilburys

There's no real road map as to where to go once your band breaks up. With some of the uglier implosions not even leaving the members on speaking terms, it's always hard to make it back up to the top when left to your own devices. It also is a bit of a struggle when your previous band may very well be one of the greatest of all time.

After the bitter breakup of the Beatles at the turn of the '70s, George Harrison found himself out of a job for the first time since he was in his teens. Not wanting to abandon the rockstar lifestyle just yet, Harrison came into his own as a songwriter in his solo career, where he nabbed some of the first solo Fab hits like My Sweet Lord and All Things Must Pass. That was only the beginning of the classics though.

Wanting to have someone to play off of, Harrison formed the Traveling Wilburys by jamming with his rock star friends, from Tom Petty on bass to Roy Orbison taking lead vocals, Bob Dylan writing some stuff, and Jeff Lynne contributing magnificent production. With every song being a round robin of lead vocals, Harrison's guitar skills never left him, always bringing in just the right amount of melodic phrasing to put the cherry on top of every song. It would be easy to qualify this as the "dad rock" years of George Harrison, but rarely had middle-aged rock ever sounded this good.
