10 Rock Music Acts That Went Dark (AND NAILED IT)

3. Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon

There's no right way to suddenly walk out of the greatest band in the world. In the aftermath of the Beatles' breakup, every one of the Fabs seemed to deal with their trauma in their own ways, all while lawsuits surrounding them put a huge albatross around their neck. Cutting ties with your friends though also leaves you wounded, and John Lennon was not in good shape when he released his first solo album.

Coming off of heroin and also being treated to psychological therapy while he was writing these songs, what you're hearing on Plastic Ono Band is John unpacking all of the repressed emotions that he had kept down for so long. While these songs might not have fit well as Beatles tracks or anything, you can hear John taking away all of the masks that his life as a celebrity gave him, making confessional tracks about his issues with his absent parents on Mother or how the higher ups in the government are all too willing to jerk you around on Working Class Hero.

Though John might like to lay into himself a lot on this record, the clearest message of the whole thing comes on God, where he lets everyone know that the Beatles are officially done and that we all needed to move on. The dream was over now, and if John had the strength to wake up from the dream and keep moving, we all needed to follow suit as well.
