10 Rock Music Albums That Were Way Ahead Of Their Time
4. Freak Out! - The Mothers Of Invention
To give a comprehensive backstory for Frank Zappa would take several years, many gallons of coffee, and several other substances that won't get mentioned here.
The lead singer of The Mothers of Invention was a musical island all of his own. Nobody before or since has ever been quite like him and, to be honest, that's probably a good thing.
The Mothers started life as a blues covers band, but Zappa encouraged them to record their own material when it came time to lay down their first studio album.
The end result was an album that must have sounded at the time like it came from outer space.
Freak Out! was ahead of the curve in so many ways. Its a concept album, which was a rarity when it was released in 1966. It was also released as a double album, one of the first times this was done for a rock record.
As for the music, that was a intoxicating mixture of blues, doo-wop, psych, jazz, and just about everything else under the sun.
It helped inspired The Beatles to make Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which itself inspired so many artists.
