10 Rock Music Bands With Unique Selling Points
7. Mongolian Throat Singing - The Hu
According to ancient Chinese history, the Xiongnu were a group of nomadic peoples who inhabited Eurasia from the 3rd Century BC to the 1st Century AD.
Roughly two thousand years after they faded away, the Xiongnu were honoured in the form of... a metal band that does Metallica covers?
The Hu, a folk metal outfit formed in 2016, call their music "hunnu rock", as Hünnü is what Xiongnu is known as in their native Mongolian. To honour their homeland and their ancestry, the members incorporate traditional Mongolian music into their contemporary heavy metal sound, including several traditional instruments and the art of throat singing.
Mongolia is probably the last place most Western music fans would think metal would come from, but The Hu have actually become a global success. They were invited to contribute to the 30th anniversary of Metallica's Black Album, have had their songs included in two major Star Wars video games, and had one of their tracks converted into Simlish!
In a world where commercialisation is more prevalent than ever, it's genuinely lovely to see such an underrepresented and historical genre get some attention.
