10 Rock Music Collaborations No One Could Have Predicted

5. Fear Factory & Gary Numan

It's quite wholesome seeing artists covering songs alongside the original performer.

The most immediate form of hero worship, it is typically reserved for live shows, with examples including Metallica performing "Am I Evil?" with Diamond Head, or more recently, Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan joining Foo Fighters on stage for a rendition of GNR hit "It's So Easy".

A more uncommon occurrence is when such a collaboration occurs in the studio.

Cut to the late 90s when things were weirder, and after gaining early traction with their brand of fast-paced industrial groove metal, LA-based Fear Factory released their third album Obsolete in July 1998. While the release did well critically early on, it wasn't until the following year where Obsolete was re-released where the album broke ground, thanks in huge part to the inclusion of a cover of 1979 new wave classic "Cars" by Gary Numan.

Numan was on board to record a duet with Burton C. Bell after hearing that Fear Factory had been performing the song live in the years preceding. The collaboration proved to be beneficial for both parties as Numan was introduced to a new generation of music fans while Obsolete became, and remains, Fear Factory's highest-selling album.
