10 Rock Music Songs That You Didn't Know Were About Drugs
9. Dumb - Nirvana
During most of the sessions for In Utero, Kurt Cobain was picking up a pretty nasty habit with heroin. Although he claimed that it helped soothe his ongoing stomach problems, it was that kind of numb feeling that ultimately led to him overdosing in Rome on Nirvana's final tour and culminating in his suicide a few months after. And if there's one song that says it all for his addiction, it has to be Dumb.
If you were to look at the lyrics though, there's no reason to think that this has anything to do with drugs at all. You could probably make the case that this is a full blown love song from Kurt, until you actually pick up on the context that he's saying this. From the minute the song starts, the hazy feeling already gets you feeling like you're floating on a cloud, almost like you're in that state of bliss that heroin puts you on.
Once the chorus rolls around though, Kurt probably gets more honest than he intended, saying that he thinks he's dumb but might just be happy. Seeing how this is the start of his personal downward spiral, it's heartbreaking to hear him in this state. At this point, there was no saving this man, only the shell of what he once was and not even having the capacity to feel joy outside of his dependence on drugs.
