10 Rock Songs NOT Sung By The Lead Singer

7. Beth - KISS

When KISS started getting the ball rolling, they envisioned a band that would be a hard rock update of the Beatles. With everyone contributing an equal role in the band, most of the vocal duties were relegated to the hard rocker voice of Paul Stanley or the demonic tone of Gene Simmons. Any great hard rock band would be fine with just one of those singers, but only the sultry voice of Peter Criss could do justice to "Beth."

Coming right after their trademark live album Destroyer, Beth marked a bit of a turning point for the band. Whereas their earlier output was primarily just hard rock material, this was a lush ballad about a girl that felt more at home on AM radio than in the world of stadium rock.

Everyone in the band was initially against the song's inclusion on the album, but once producer Bob Ezrin added the orchestration, it turned into something beautiful.

While the song was a slow burn on the radio, the idea of a man made up like a cat singing a song about missing his girl back home was just weird enough to work on the charts. Stanley and Simmons may be more in line with hard rock, but it took Peter Criss' voice to win the hearts of millions.
