10 Rock Songs That Are A Nightmare To Sing
3. Judith - A Perfect Circle
At the turn of the century, metal was not necessarily known for its intense vocal performances anymore. Though we did have the likes of Linkin Park around at the time, the nu metal boom had most bands trading in great singers for rappers that either couldn't sing or didn't want to at all. If you look a little deeper though, we had a diamond among the ranks with Judith.
Being one of the first offerings from A Perfect Circle, Maynard James Keenan's performance made quite the impression when playing off Billy Howerdel's ethereal sounding guitar fluctuations. While Maynard was already known to lay the intensity on pretty thick with Tool at the time, he is absolutely savage on this track, going from screams to a singing voice that sounds like he's on the verge of a mental breakdown.
The real kicker to everything comes at the end of the song, as Maynard holds out a note that is a virtual endurance test, lasting for around 22 seconds without losing any of his breath support in the process. Then again, this was a guy who kept singing a song even when Judo-choking out a fan, so we should expect nothing less, right? Well, probably, but it's still superhuman to be able to pull something like this off effectively.
