10 Rock Songs That Don't Sound Like The Artists Who Made Them

3. Mother – The Police

Western reggae rock kings The Police disbanded nearly four decades ago, and while in the time since most of their back catalogue has come to be looked on as significant to the development of rock music in the UK, there is one track which doesn't quite fit the mould.

Believe it or not, 1983's Synchronicity is not only The Police's final album, but also contains their hit of hits, Every Breath You Take. Unfortunately it also contains Mother -- a dissonant song about having some serious mummy issues. And you won't find any reggae or soul here; Mother sounds more like a Captain Beefheart outtake -- bizarre, humorous and off-the-wall, representing a serious break from type for the trio.

Plonking it at #4 in the album's track list was also a bold move, meaning Mother can't be considered anything but part of the artistic whole. And why not? The band were on top of the world and all but untouchable, and this song was their assertion that, yes, they could do whatever they wanted. The song was written about so much upon release it threatened to overshadow the rest of the record, but then the aforementioned Every Breath really hit its stride and everything was hunky dory again.
