10 Rock Songs That Have NOT Aged Well
3. Dude (Looks Like A Lady) - Aerosmith (1987)
This song will forever be affiliated with the charming and hilarious Robin Williams movie Mrs. Doubtfire. It worked perfectly to score a montage of Williams done-up like an aged Scottish woman, desperately trying to stay in contact with his estranged kids.
'80s hair rockers played with gender like no one's business, adopting women's clothing, eyeliner and teased hairstyles. Steven Tyler was the queen of this; his autobiography documents his escapades on the Sunset Strip, where guys would strut around with all the confidence of catwalk models.
Tyler supposedly came up with the concept of the song when he mistakenly approached an attractive blonde in a bar. In actual fact, the blonde turned out to be Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil. Although the song seems to have been written in the name of fun - about a specific lived experience - the lyrics are likely not ones that would be well received now.
In recent years, the song has come under fire for appearing to poke fun at trans individuals. The lyrics could certainly be interpreted as being insensitive to individuals born to one sex but presenting as another.
