10 Rock Songs That Have Obvious Mistakes In Them
4. Polly - Nirvana
In the history of grunge, there weren't many people that were willing to call Nirvana a very lyrical band by any stretch of the imagination. Even if their melodies were amazing and hit you right in the center of the chest, it was almost impossible for anyone to even understand what Kurt Cobain was saying, with words that seemed to be written almost as an afterthought. That's not to say they didn't have a serious side, as Polly tapped into something a lot more disturbed than before.
With hardly any drums and led by Kurt's five string acoustic guitar, this song tells the story of a sexual predator preying on a woman, only for him to let his guard down and lose her in the process. This is a song that should be treated very delicately, but Kurt didn't feel the need to correct himself coming in at the wrong time. After the second chorus, there was supposed to be an instrumental break driven by Krist Novoselic's bassline, except Kurt decided to start the third verse early by saying "Polly said."
Though he does correct himself by cutting himself off, the anticipation of the next verse actually sounded pretty nice in the context of the song, so the guys just decided to leave it in. The screwup even found its way onto the "new wave" version that was done for the Incesticide record, as Kurt puts even more emphasis to the early part of the verse. Then again, having this one little bit arrive before we were ready for it puts us in an even more uneasy position, not really being able to pinpoint exactly what's coming next.
