10 Rock Songs That Insulted Other Musicians

4. Glorified G - Pearl Jam

Part of the appeal of Pearl Jam back in the day was how much more authentic they felt next to the other bands strutting their stuff on MTV. In the era when hairspray and lipstick may have dominated, the idea of having just a bunch of talented musicians rocking out in flannel shirts was just the kind of raw energy we needed. Eddie Vedder did have some issues with the older generation though, and Glorified G came about when the band’s drummer started to get a little too big for his britches.

As the band started to pick up some steam off the back of Ten, one of Dave Abbruzzese’s expenses included two guns that he had purchased, which Vedder found particularly appalling. Describing them as just glorified pellet guns to soothe things over, Vedder still wasn’t having it, penning this song about Dave’s new firearms and the toxic masculinity that goes along with owning a gun in the modern age.

Much like the songs Daughter and Jeremy, this whole track is practically a character piece, with Vedder playing the ultra macho male specimen looking to do everything he can to assert his masculinity, always making sure that he keeps his guns loaded and making sure to announce how he’s armed wherever he goes. Dave would only stay in the band for a few more years after Vs., but this may have been his first clue that his days with the band were numbered.
