10 Rock Songs That People Have Completely Misunderstood
5. Audioslave - Like A Stone
Supergroups have become a common feature of rock music through the years, bringing the talented individuals from separate bands together to create something new that is wholly unique. Many would argue that Audioslave are amongst the best supergroups of all time, formed from members of the '90s rock powerhouses, Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine. The group’s self-titled debut album was released in 2002, and to this day, is hailed as one of the best debut rock albums ever made.
Even though there are a magnitude of amazing songs on this record such as ‘Show Me How to Live’, ‘Cochise’ and ‘Shadow on the Sun’, they all struggle to match the deep emotion of ‘Like A Stone’. Contrary to initially popular belief though, ‘Like A Stone’ is not a love song.
The true narrative of this song was so deeply rooted and disguised, that even the other band members misinterpreted the meaning. Bassist Tim Commerford admitted that he thought ‘Like A Stone’ was a love song when Chris Cornell first showed him the lyrics. But, Cornell later confirmed in an interview that the song is in fact about a man in a hotel room contemplating death, and coming up with the idea that if you’re good you get to relive a favourite memory in the afterlife. In essence, it’s about a man waiting to die so he can relive his best days.
