10 Rock Songs That People Have Completely Misunderstood
4. Megadeth - Mechanix
Here’s a fact about songwriting that almost everyone is secretly aware of: most songs that are seemingly about cars, are in reality not about cars. A few examples of this include ‘Hey Porsche’ by Nelly, ‘Jeepster’ by T. Rex and most notably in regards to this article, ‘Mechanix’ by Megadeth.
Following his abrupt departure from Metallica in 1983, Dave Mustaine set out with the one goal of eclipsing his former bandmates with a new project, Megadeth. Mustaine formed his new group alongside members David Ellefson, Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson, who released their debut album, ‘Killing is My Business… And Business Is Good’, in 1985.
Concluding Megadeth’s debut album is ‘Mechanix’, a song which (like most other songs about cars) includes some extremely suggestive lyrics. A few of these lewd lines include ‘Made my drive shaft crank, Made my pistons bulge’, which inadvertently led listeners to the wrong conclusion.
Unfortunately for Mustiane, misconceptions around this song exist to this day, with some believing the song is about doing inappropriate things with a car, when it’s in fact about doing said actions in a car. Despite the band’s best efforts to clear the air, jokes about ‘Mechanix’ persist and it is now rarely featured on live sets.
