10 Rock Songs That Were A Nightmare To Make
8. Band on the Run - Paul McCartney
After finally making his solo career work with Wings, Paul McCartney had started to want a change of scenery. With the release of Red Rose Speedway doing serviceable enough with the great single My Love, his desire to explore new sounds eventually brought him to Nigeria, where he would begin work on the smash single and album Band on the Run. What no one saw coming though was the mass exit that happened just before recording.
Just as the group were about to embark on their African journey, both drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist Henry McCullough quit before they even got on the plane, citing both artistic differences and business fallouts on their list of grievances. Choosing to finish the album as a trio with Linda and Denny Laine, losing half the band only proved to be the first of Macca's concerns.
Once arriving in Nigeria, Paul found that there was no proper studio set up for them to record in, resulting in him basically building an entire makeshift studio from scratch before eventually getting down to work. Seeing how much he felt in exile from the rest of the world, Band on the Run is probably the most emblematic song of this time, being both a reflection of McCartney's unstable career and the start of his resurgence in the public eye. Given that most of this song feels like a journey to a better place, Macca couldn't have mirrored reality any better.
