10 Rock Songs That Were Written As A Joke
1. Dominated Love Slave - Green Day
You have to remember that most of Green Day were kids when they first started out. After the release of their first few EPs, Billie Joe Armstrong was barely out of his teens and was still trying to come to terms with who he even was as a rock star. You can hear a lot of that uncertainty in his lyrics, but you also hear them blowing off steam whenever Tre stepped up to the mic.
On the drummer’s first record with the band, everything takes a break in the middle of Kerplunk for Dominated Love Slave, where Billie and Tre switch roles to perform a song about the wonders of S&M. There’s no real joke to it besides that either, as Tre adopts a country twang to his voice to create a Southern fried ode to getting hurt, from having a belt sander put across his skin to being slapped in the forehead with a chain.
For as dumb as the song might seem, this was actually a lot more forward thinking for the pop punk formula. Though they are two completely different songs, it’s not that hard to see why a band like this would eventually grow to make a song like Longview a few years later. The real tunes would come later, but this is just a bunch of teens having fun.
