10 Rock Songs That Were Written As A Joke

8. Help - The Beatles

Ever since the Beatles' breakup, John Lennon always held his song Help! pretty close to his chest. Seeing how his life was spiraling out of control in the midst of Beatlemania, Lennon always singled out this song as being an accurate snapshot of where he was at this stage of rock stardom. That's just the chorus though. The verses tell a little bit of a different story.

While the first verse is pretty cut and dry, there are more complex word choices in the second verse, as Lennon uses words like 'insecure,' 'independence', and 'self-assured' and make them fit perfectly in his rhyme scheme. Rather than just use this for the sake of variety, this was actually done as a sort of revenge on a journalist they had run into on the road. Though the journalist in question liked their music, there were some choice words made about Lennon only writing songs with one-syllable words.

Taken in that light, these little breaks in the tune serve as snide little jabs at Lennon's critic, proving that he can flip his sentence structure around any way he wants to in order to suit the song he writes. The song's main message of help may be clear, but the actual construction does have a bit of dry humor if you look for it.
